Description
This lesson covers a second set of 18 hand signals used in ground operations. A colleague demonstrates each signal in sequence, including signals for vehicle control, equipment connection and disconnection, braking, and pushback coordination, while the purpose and visual characteristics of each are explained.
Lesson Overview
- 1Introduction to 18 IATA-standard hand signals for vehicle operations and pushback coordination
- 2Observe each signal demonstrated in context by a colleague on the apron
- 3Receive targeted feedback on incorrect identifications with the option to observe the demonstration again or receive additional visual cues after a third failed attempt
- 4Complete the lesson once all 18 signals have been correctly identified
Skills Acquired
- Recognize hand signals for vehicle control, covering operational status, braking, and movement communication
- Identify signals for connecting and disconnecting equipment, including standard and GPU-specific variants
- Understand the purpose of pushback-specific signals and when each applies during pushback operations
- Distinguish between paired signals that carry opposite meanings to prevent operational errors
- The trainee stands in a parking lot facing a colleague ready to demonstrate each hand signal in sequence.

- Brakes Off
- Interphone
- Air Up
- Slow Down
- Then the signals specific to pushback operations are shown in sequence:
- Clear to Push
- Connect to Tow Bar
- Change of Pushback Direction
- After each demonstration, the trainee can replay it before proceeding to the next signal.
