Description

This lesson introduces the towable stairs as a core piece of passenger handling equipment used for aircraft boarding and disembarkation. Trainees learn to recognize all main components and understand the basic mechanical and safety principles behind elevation, securing, and stabilization of towable stairs.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to the towable stairs and its role in ground operations
  2. 2Guided showcase of key components
  3. 3Demonstrations of lift, securing, and lowering principles through short animations
  4. 4Explanation of stabilizing systems and manual controls including levers and hand pumps
  5. 5Familiarization with passenger safety features such as handrails, warning lamp, and safety gate

Skills Acquired

  • Identify key structural and control components of the towable stairs
  • Recognize how the towbar, latch, and handbrake function for towing and parking stability
  • Locate and describe the purpose of the lift pump, stabilizer jacks, and height control levers
  • Distinguish between lifting, securing, and lowering actions based on lever sequence
  • Identify built-in features that ensure stair stability and passenger safety

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins in front of the towable stairs, facing the unit positioned on the GSE parking area.
  • A guided introduction explains the purpose of the equipment and highlights that this session focuses on familiarization, not active operation.
  • The trainee approaches the towbar area and observes an animation showing how the towbar is lifted, latched, and braked.
  • Then the stabilizer jacks, battery compartment, and lift pump are presented, accompanied by an animation of the stairs being raised using the hand pump.
  • The lower and unlock levers are shown next, demonstrating how the platform is secured and lowered in the correct sequence.
  • The trainee continues around the unit to view the stair light switch, handrails, warning lamp, and safety gate, each explained through visual highlights and short narration.
  • After each animation, a replay option allows review before proceeding to the next section.
  • The lesson concludes with a visual summary confirming all key components have been identified and understood.
