Description

This lesson trains the fundamental steps required to safely move and park a unit of towable passenger stairs. Trainees learn to operate the stabilizer jacks, handle the towbar brake, and move the stairs safely by hand. The lesson reinforces safe body mechanics, control awareness, and the importance of secure parking procedures to prevent unintended movement on the apron.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Prepare the towable stairs for movement by retracting the stabilizer jacks and releasing the towbar brake
  2. 2Practice pushing and steering the unit safely using correct hand and body positioning
  3. 3Perform controlled pulling and fine alignment maneuvers for precise placement
  4. 4Reapply the towbar latch to secure the unit and engage the brake
  5. 5Extend the stabilizer jacks to complete safe parking and ensure stability

Skills Acquired

  • Operate and secure the towable stairs safely during manual movement
  • Apply correct body mechanics and coordinated hand control when maneuvering
  • Manage brake and stabilizer jacks to ensure safe positioning and parking
  • Maintain situational awareness and equipment stability throughout handling

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins beside a parked towable stairs unit and receives an introduction to safe handling principles for ground movement.
  • Guided actions demonstrate how to prepare the unit for movement by releasing the towbar latch, disengaging the brake, and retracting the stabilizer jacks.
  • The trainee practices correct grip, stance, and posture while pushing the stairs forward, learning to control motion and steer effectively.
  • A section on fine alignment teaches how to make small positional adjustments by pulling the towable stairs from the front.
  • Next is moving the stairs backwards. After watching a demonstration, the trainee grips the towbar with both hands, and pulls the towable stairs backward along a straight path toward the target position.
  • Steering practice follows, guiding the trainee to adjust adjust direction left and right smoothly while maintaining control and stability until the stairs are correctly positioned.
  • After the movement exercises, the trainee secures the equipment by re-engaging the towbar latch and thereby the parking brake.
  • The session concludes with extending the stabilizer jacks and confirming that the stairs are safely parked, stable, and ready for standby.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Triggers a warning and restart, reinforcing the risk of hand injuries and the need for constant grip and control.

Learning Outcome

Prevents movement and displays a caution, teaching that mobility requires full stabilization release.

Learning Outcome

Issues a visual and audio alert, highlighting the role of the latch in engaging the handbrake.

Learning Outcome

Pauses the action and repositions the trainee, showing correct grip zones for safe pulling.
