Description

This lesson trains the correct and safe procedure for disconnecting a Ground Power Unit (GPU) from an aircraft at the end of turnaround operations. Trainees learn to communicate effectively with the cockpit crew, follow the precise power-down sequence, and handle all equipment and safety items in a controlled, methodical manner to maintain apron safety and prevent equipment damage.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Request and receive cockpit confirmation to disconnect GPU power
  2. 2Turn off GPU power output and engine in the correct order
  3. 3Disconnect and stow the power cable at the GPU
  4. 4Turn off GPU ignition and complete final equipment shutdown

Skills Acquired

  • Perform coordinated GPU power removal and shutdown sequence with cockpit confirmation
  • Shut down GPU power systems following correct operational sequence
  • Maintain procedural discipline to prevent power surges or tripping hazards

Lesson Procedure

  • The exercise begins beside the running GPU, which is supplying power to the aircraft at the end of turnaround.
  • The trainee moves to the correct position beneath the cockpit and requests permission to disconnect, receiving visual confirmation from the pilot.
  • Returning to the GPU, they switch off the power output first, then shut down the engine in the proper sequence.
  • At the aircraft power receptacle, the plug is removed carefully with both hands, and the suspension hook is released.
  • The power cable is carried back and secured neatly in the GPU’s cable holder.
  • The trainee completes the final shutdown by pressing the ignition button to power off the GPU completely.
  • The procedure ends with all cables stowed and the apron ready for pushback operations.
