Description

Prepares trainees to safely provide external electrical power to a parked aircraft using a Ground Power Unit (GPU). The lesson builds situational awareness around the aircraft stand, emphasizes correct sequencing and coordination with the cockpit, and reinforces safe handling of ground equipment and cables during power connection.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Identify the correct GPU parking position near the aircraft
  2. 2Prepare and start the GPU at the control panel
  3. 3Access the aircraft power receptacle, connect the GPU cable, and activate power delivery in the correct sequence
  4. 4Confirm GPU power connection with the cockpit crew using hand signals

Skills Acquired

  • Position and prepare a Ground Power Unit for aircraft power delivery
  • Operate GPU controls to start and enable power output safely
  • Connect and secure the external power cable to the aircraft receptacle
  • Coordinate with cockpit crew to confirm successful GPU power connection

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee observes the parked aircraft and is asked to pick the correct GPU parking position that ensures safe clearance from engines and pushback paths.
  • At the GPU control panel, the trainee starts the ignition, activates the engine, and verifies normal system indicators.
  • The trainee approaches the aircraft and opens the external power receptacle access panel.
  • Then, the trainee retrieves the power cable from the GPU and carries it safely to the aircraft.
  • The suspension hook is attached to the support bracket, and the power plug is inserted correctly into the aircraft receptacle.
  • The trainee returns to the GPU, enables the power output, and confirms normal voltage readings on the display.
  • Finally, the trainee establishes visual contact with the cockpit, and signals “GPU power connected”.
