Description

This lesson trains the use of every control in the de-icer's operator cabin, from powering up the cabin to spraying and driving. Trainees move the cabin and the telescopic boom, aim the nozzle, set the spray pattern and fluid flow, and drive the de-icer from the operator cabin. The focus is on what each control does on the real de-icer, and on the rules that keep the de-icer stable and the spray pointed away from the truck.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Power up the operator cabin and get to know the screens and safety controls
  2. 2Raise, lower and turn the cabin and the boom, and extend and retract the telescopic boom
  3. 3Start and stop the spray, aim the nozzle, and set the spray pattern and fluid flow
  4. 4Drive the de-icer from the operator cabin and learn the three rules for driving
  5. 5Operate the whole de-icer freely and practice aiming the spray at targets

Skills Acquired

  • Locate and operate the controls for the cabin, the boom and the nozzle
  • Match the spray pattern and fluid flow to the level of contamination
  • Understand the emergency stop and the information display as tools for safe operation
  • Apply the three rules for driving from the operator cabin to prevent tipping the de-icer

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee starts seated in the powered-down operator cabin and switches on the cabin power on the left armrest.
  • The information display, the Data Transmission System, the emergency stop and the function panel with the horn, intercom, heating, work lights and wipers are introduced.
  • Each left joystick control is shown on the real joystick first, then the trainee uses it: raising and lowering the cabin and the boom, turning the cabin, which stops at 350 degrees, and extending and retracting the 12 meter telescopic boom.
  • The cabin is turned to face the same direction as the driving cab, so the spray always points away from the de-icer.
  • The trainee starts and stops the spray, aims the nozzle with the right joystick after a demonstration on a model nozzle, switches between the cone spray and the solid spray, and sets the fluid flow.
  • The trainee switches to drive mode, drives the de-icer forward, and learns the three rules: never drive and spray at the same time, turn the cabin to face the direction of travel, and drive only at walking speed when the cabin is raised or the boom is extended.
  • In free practice, the trainee operates the whole de-icer and sprays at targets around the truck, then ends the lesson with the come home button, which returns the cabin and boom to their neutral position.
