Description

This lesson trains a complete one-step de-icing job on the right wing of an Airbus A320, from accepting the job on the Data Transmission System to recording it as done. Trainees drive the de-icer into its working position, watch a demonstration with a second de-icer on the other wing, set up the job and the spray, and clear the wing strip by strip from the wing tip to the wing root. The focus is on correct spray distance and technique while keeping fluid out of the engine inlet and off the windows, doors and emergency exits.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Accept the de-icing job and drive the de-icer into its working position at the wing
  2. 2Watch a demonstration of the technique with a second de-icer on the other wing
  3. 3Select the procedure and fluid, and set the spray pattern and flow for the conditions
  4. 4De-ice the right wing strip by strip, from the wing tip to the wing root
  5. 5Record the treated area and the working position, and close the job

Skills Acquired

  • Process a de-icing job on the Data Transmission System, from acceptance to the job summary
  • Position the de-icer at the wing, clear of the aircraft
  • Select the procedure, spray pattern and flow that match the weather and the contamination
  • Clear a wing completely with the correct spray distance, direction and sequence
  • Identify the no-spray zones around the wing to protect the engines and the cabin

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee starts in the raised operator cabin on an open stand at minus 1 °C after a night of snow, with the A320 prepared for de-icing: parking brake set, flaps and slats retracted.
  • The trainee selects and accepts the new job on the Data Transmission System, drives the de-icer straight into the highlighted working position ahead of the leading edge, and reports At Location.
  • From an observation position, the trainee watches a demonstration with a second de-icer clearing the left wing: nozzle 1 to 1.5 meters above the wing, short strokes from the leading edge toward the trailing edge, and the cabin turning toward the wing root.
  • Back in position, the trainee selects the one-step procedure, since no more snow is falling, and the de-icing fluid, then switches to spray mode and sets the medium cone and 70 percent flow for the layer of light snow.
  • The engine inlet, the cabin windows and the emergency exits are shown as areas not to spray.
  • The trainee brings the nozzle above the wing tip and clears the highlighted strips one by one toward the wing root, stopping the spray now and then to check what snow is left.
  • On the task page, the trainee records the right wing and the front right position, ends the job and reviews the Job Summary.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Error and rewind; the de-icer stops in its working position, clear of the aircraft

Learning Outcome

Red error and rewind; contact can damage the aircraft

Learning Outcome

Red error and rewind; fluid is never sprayed directly into an engine

Learning Outcome

Red error and rewind; these areas are never sprayed directly

Learning Outcome

Warning; the spray stays on the wing

Learning Outcome

Red error and rewind; the spray loses its effect at that distance

Learning Outcome

Warning; the boom is close to touching the aircraft
