Description

This lesson trains the correct use of the airport tractor’s tow hitch system, focusing on safe handling of the tow pin, and drawbar connection. Trainees learn to securely attach and detach baggage carts and verify proper coupling through a safety check to prevent towing incidents on the ramp.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to the tow hitch and its key components
  2. 2Correct placement of the drawbar at the approved hitch level
  3. 3Hitching and securing a baggage cart with coordinated hand actions, including the mandatory shake check for tow pin security
  4. 4Demonstration of hazards caused by incomplete hitching

Skills Acquired

  • Operate the tractor’s tow hitch and tow pin system safely and efficiently
  • Attach and secure a baggage cart to the tractor using correct hitching technique
  • Verify proper coupling through mandatory safety checks
  • Detach and stow towing components in a controlled and safe manner

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee starts behind the tractor, observing the rear hitch assembly and learning its main components and function.
  • They move closer to the hitch and practice removing the tow pin by releasing the tow pin latch and lifting it vertically from the pintle hook.
  • Once removed, the tow pin is reinserted into the hitch, pushed fully down to engage the latch, and checked with a firm shake to confirm it is locked.
  • The scene then transitions to include a baggage cart positioned beside the tractor. Approaching the hitch, the trainee selects the correct middle level for the drawbar.
  • Next, they remove the tow pin again, align the drawbar into the hitch opening, and reinsert the pin to secure the connection.
  • A final shake check confirms a safe, locked coupling, followed by an instructional animation showing the danger of unsecured hitches.
  • To conclude, the drawbar is unhooked, the tow pin returned to its original position, and all components left in a safe, ready state.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Tow pin drops, prompting a rewind and reinforcing the need for controlled handling.

Learning Outcome

Causes the tow pin to appear unsecured, demonstrating the danger of incomplete locking.

Learning Outcome

Blocks progression and plays a warning, stressing that every coupling must be physically verified.

Learning Outcome

Triggers a correction and explanation on brake engagement risks or drawbar slippage.

Learning Outcome

Triggers a rewind, emphasizing grip discipline and maintaining control of equipment.
