Training Type
Initial Training
IATA Standard
IATA AHM 1110, Edition 46 & IATA IGOM, Edition 15

Description

This lesson introduces the tractor’s tow inching system, enabling slow, precise reverse movement for accurate coupling. Trainees learn to activate it from the cabin and operate it from the rear control panel. The training emphasizes fine motion control, safe positioning, and crush-zone awareness during ramp operations.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Overview of the tow inching system and its function in precise coupling operations
  2. 2Guided activation of the system from within the tractor cabin using the correct control sequence
  3. 3Practical operation at the rear panel to perform controlled inching movements
  4. 4Emphasis on movement sensitivity, safe positioning, and crush-zone awareness
  5. 5Demonstration of the emergency stop function and system reset

Skills Acquired

  • Enable the tow inching system using the correct cabin control sequence
  • Operate the external inching panel with short, precise button inputs
  • Maintain safe positioning while observing tractor movement
  • Use and reset the emergency stop system during inching operations

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins seated inside the tractor cabin, facing the control panel. A guided introduction highlights the ignition, parking brake, gear stick, and inching switch.
  • Step-by-step prompts lead the trainee to turn on the ignition and engine, confirm the parking brake is applied, shift the gear to neutral, and activate the inching switch. Once completed, the system is ready for use.
  • The trainee trainsitions to the rear of the tractor. Standing on the designated safety spot, the trainee observes the external inching panel, noting the two buttons: the inching control and the emergency stop.
  • Instructions emphasize short taps on the inching button to move the tractor a few centimeters at a time, avoiding continuous pressure that could cause loss of control.
  • The trainee performs several successful short inching movements, observing how slight button presses affect motion. Pressing the wrong button or holding the button too long triggers a corrective rewind.
  • The lesson concludes with the emergency stop procedure: the trainee presses the stop button to halt the tractor completely, then resets it to restore normal operation.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Triggers a rewind and warning, teaching control through short, precise taps.

Learning Outcome

Highlights correct button identification and operational focus.

Learning Outcome

Reinforces the need to avoid the crush zone between tractor and cart.

Learning Outcome

Demonstrates system dependency on correct setup and procedural discipline.
