Description

Prepares trainees to correctly extend and retract the belt loader’s guardrails for safe aircraft loading and unloading. This lesson demonstrates the proper sequence, position, and safety precautions to prevent falls and avoid aircraft damage.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to the purpose and safety importance of guardrails
  2. 2Observation of a colleague performing full extension and retraction
  3. 3Guided practice to extend and the lower and upper guardrails
  4. 4Correct sequence to step onto and off the belt loader
  5. 5Optional free training for hands-on practice

Skills Acquired

  • Correct hand placement to safely grab and operate each guardrail
  • Extend and retract guardrails in correct sequence and posture
  • Extend and retract guardrails sequentially or simultaneously
  • Step on and off the belt loader using the correct access points

Lesson procedure

  • The trainee begins in front of the belt loader and watches a colleague demonstrate the full guardrail procedure. Stepping up correctly, extending and retracting both the upper and lower the rails, and stepping down safely.
  • The trainee identifies and selects the correct location to step onto the belt loader. Incorrect selections trigger retry prompts until the right access point is used.
  • Guided instructions prompt the trainee to walk towards the guardrails, kneel down, grab both lower guardrails, and extend them simultaneously. Proper technique is confirmed through visual feedback.
  • The trainee stands up and extends each upper guardrail one by one using both hands, applying correct form and maximum extension range
  • The trainee must first retract the upper guardrails one at a time. They are then required to kneel down and retract the lower guardrails, either simultaneously or individually.
  • After retracting all guardrails, the trainee moves to the rear of the conveyor belt and selects the correct stair step to safely dismount. Incorrect attempts trigger “Danger” feedback until the correct action is chosen
  • The lesson concludes with a success summary confirming all objectives achieved, with an optional free training available for additional hands-on practice.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Prompts retrial until correct step location is selected.

Learning Outcome

Voice over feedback and reset reinforces safe behavior near the belt loaders edge.

Learning Outcome

Warning cues remind using both hands and proper form.

Learning Outcome

A warning alert appears, advising caution to avoid getting fingers caught between overlapping rails.

Learning Outcome

The task cannot be completed successfully; a message prompts the user to fully extend the rails before proceeding.
