Training Type
Initial Training
IATA Standard
IATA AHM 1110, Edition 46 & IATA IGOM, Edition 15

Description

This lesson trains the safe operation of the extendable handrails and safety gate on the towable stairs platform. Trainees learn how to open, extend, retract, and secure these components correctly to maintain platform safety and prevent contact with the aircraft fuselage.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Observation of a colleague demonstrating the full sequence
  2. 2Opening of the belt barrier and red safety gate
  3. 3Extension of right and left handrails using knob and push technique including the mandatory safety check
  4. 4Retraction of both handrails with proper two-hand coordination
  5. 5Closing of the safety gate and belt barrier

Skills Acquired

  • Operate extendable handrails using correct two-hand technique and knob release mechanism
  • Confirm full lock-in by performing a manual shake check after extension or retraction
  • Manage the red safety gate safely before and after handrail operation

Lesson Procedure

  • The lesson begins with the trainee observing a colleague on a nearby towable stairs performing the full sequence — opening the safety gate, extending both handrails, retracting them, and closing the gate.
  • After the demonstration, the trainee starts operating independently: opening the belt barrier, walking up the stairs, and unlocking the safety gate by pulling the latch with one hand and sliding the gate aside with the other.
  • Standing safely on the platform, the trainee extends the right handrail by lifting the front knob and pushing the rail forward in two stages, performing a firm shake check once locked.
  • The same process follows for the left handrail, switching hand positions appropriately and confirming engagement through audible and tactile feedback.
  • To retract, the trainee lifts the knob(s) to release the locking pin and pushes the handrails back in two controlled motions, again performing the shake check after retraction.
  • The safety gate is then closed and latched securely, followed by the belt barrier, completing the full safe-handling cycle.
  • The lesson ends with confirmation that both handrails and the safety gate are secured for towable stairs movement.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Locks movement, reinforcing the need to release the safety pin before operation.

Learning Outcome

Prompts warning and rewind, emphasizing verification of locked status.

Learning Outcome

Triggers feedback on correct two-hand coordination for safe control.

Learning Outcome

Fades to red warning, demonstrating fall hazard prevention.
