Description

This lesson trains executing a complete 90-degree right-turn pushback on a live apron, from confirming readiness with the Headset Operator through to final positioning on the taxiway centerline. Trainees practice responding to stop signals for crossing traffic, maintaining safe distance from ground personnel, and positioning the aircraft precisely at the target marking. The focus is on immediate hand signal response, spatial awareness, and positioning accuracy to prevent collisions with personnel and equipment.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Confirm readiness with the Headset Operator through the brakes-off and thumbs-up signal exchange
  2. 2Execute the 90-degree right-turn pushback while maintaining safe distances from restricted areas and ground personnel
  3. 3Respond to a live hazard scenario requiring an immediate stop during the maneuver
  4. 4Position the aircraft on the taxiway centerline and coordinate securing the brakes with the Headset Operator

Skills Acquired

  • Confirm pushback readiness through correct hand signal exchange to ensure coordinated operations
  • Execute a right-turn pushback maneuver with precise steering to position the aircraft on the taxiway centerline
  • Respond immediately to stop signals during live pushback to prevent collisions with crossing traffic
  • Maintain safe distance from ground personnel throughout the maneuver to prevent fatal accidents

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee starts seated in the pushback tractor. The Headset Operator receives pushback clearance from the cockpit via ATC, then signals brakes-off (closed fist to open palm) followed by a thumbs-up for readiness.
  • The trainee confirms readiness by showing a thumbs-up back to the Headset Operator.
  • The trainee turns on the hazard lights, releases the parking brake, sets the gear to drive, and begins the pushback, executing a 90-degree right turn while avoiding restricted areas on both sides of the path.
  • During the pushback, a tractor crosses the taxiway path. The Headset Operator signals stop and the trainee must halt immediately until the all-clear thumbs-up is given.
  • The trainee continues the pushback and brings the aircraft to a stop precisely at the yellow triangle marking on the taxiway centerline.
  • The trainee sets the parking brake and signals brakes-set (closed fist) to the Headset Operator, holding the signal until acknowledged.
  • The Headset Operator confirms the aircraft brakes are also set by showing a closed fist back, completing the pushback sequence.
