Description

This lesson trains executing a complete 90-degree left-turn pushback on a live apron, applying the same procedures as the right-turn lesson in the opposite direction. An equipment failure scenario is introduced where shear pins break mid-maneuver, requiring the trainee to stop and honk immediately to alert the Headset Operator and cockpit. The focus is on emergency response procedures and immediate alerting to prevent uncontrolled aircraft rolling.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Confirm readiness with the Headset Operator and practice using the horn control before pushback begins
  2. 2Execute the 90-degree left-turn pushback while maintaining safe distances from restricted areas and ground personnel
  3. 3Respond to a shear pin failure mid-maneuver by stopping immediately and honking to alert personnel
  4. 4Position the aircraft on the taxiway centerline and coordinate securing the brakes with the Headset Operator

Skills Acquired

  • Execute a left-turn pushback maneuver with precise steering to position the aircraft on the taxiway centerline
  • Respond immediately to equipment failure by stopping and alerting to prevent uncontrolled aircraft movement
  • Maintain safe distance from ground personnel throughout the maneuver to prevent fatal accidents
  • Coordinate post-pushback securing procedures through correct hand signal exchange

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee starts seated in the tractor. The horn control is introduced and practiced before pushback begins.
  • The Headset Operator signals brakes-off and readiness. The trainee confirms with a thumbs-up.
  • The trainee activates hazard lights, releases the parking brake, sets the gear to drive, and executes a 90-degree left-turn pushback while avoiding restricted areas.
  • During the pushback, the shear pins break. The trainee must stop immediately and honk to alert the Headset Operator and cockpit. The cockpit sets the aircraft brakes to prevent uncontrolled rolling.
  • After the towbar is replaced, the trainee continues the pushback and brings the aircraft to a stop at the yellow triangle marking on the taxiway centerline.
  • The trainee sets the parking brake and signals brakes-set to the Headset Operator, holding the closed fist until acknowledged.
  • The Headset Operator confirms the aircraft brakes are set, completing the pushback sequence.
