Tests the trainee's ability to perform ramp hand signals from memory, drawing on the full set covered in the Recognizing and Performing lessons. Ten signals are selected at random and performed independently. Graded scoring rewards genuine, unaided recall of each signal's correct form and motion.
Exam Overview
1Perform 10 hand signals from memory, selected at random from those covered in the Recognizing and Performing lessons
2Hold static signals and repeat dynamic signals with the correct form for each
3If unsure, request help to have a colleague demonstrate the signal once (half a point), or skip it (no points)
4A minimum score of 80% (8 out of 10 points) is required to pass
Skills Acquired
Perform ramp hand signals from memory with the correct form, hold, and repetition for each
Recall the meaning and execution of movement, equipment connection, power, and pushback signals
Distinguish signals with opposite meanings to avoid conveying the wrong command
Demonstrate readiness to signal reliably to drivers and flight crews on the ramp
Exam Procedure
The exam presents 10 hand signals one at a time, selected at random from the eligible pool; each must be performed from memory, holding static signals and repeating dynamic signals as required.
If unsure how to perform a signal, the trainee can request help — a colleague then stands in front and demonstrates it once — and can still earn half a point by performing it correctly afterwards.
A signal can also be skipped, which scores no points and counts as incorrect.
Each signal scores one point performed unaided, half a point after help, or zero if skipped; a total of 8 out of 10 points (80%) is required to pass.
