Description

This lesson trains the operation of the towable stairs’ hydraulic elevation system, focusing on lifting, securing, and lowering the platform using its three-lever control setup. Trainees practice realistic pump motion, coordination of both hands, and mechanical locking procedures essential for safe, stable operation around aircraft.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Observation of a colleague demonstrating the full lift–secure–lower sequence
  2. 2Hands-on lifting of the platform using the manual lift pump
  3. 3Controlled securing of the platform through a short lower-lever pull
  4. 4Step-by-step lowering using the coordinated unlock and lower levers
  5. 5Reinforcement of proper two-hand and one-hand techniques

Skills Acquired

  • Operate and control the platform height smoothly using coordinated lever and pump actions
  • Secure the platform mechanically through correct use of the lower lever and safety pawl
  • Release and re-engage the safety mechanism with proper two-hand coordination
  • Maintain stable posture and ergonomic hand positions during manual hydraulic operation
  • Confirm platform locking and release through clear visual and auditory feedback cues

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins in front of the towable stairs, observing a colleague demonstrate the complete elevation sequence — lifting, securing, and lowering the platform.
  • Guided instructions lead the trainee to the lift pump. The trainee grabs it with both hands and performs forward-and-back pumps, raising the platform incrementally while hearing distinct ratchet clicks at each step.
  • After, the trainee continues pumping with one hand until reaching the indicated height.
  • The trainee then performs the secure-after-lifting step by briefly pulling the lower lever to the right and releasing it. The platform settles slightly, confirmed by a sharp snap-in sound, ensuring the safety pawl is fully engaged.
  • In the lowering phase, the trainee grabs the lift pump with the right hand and the unlock lever with the left, performs one short pump stroke while pulling the unlock lever to release the safety mechanism, and then shifts the right hand to the lower lever.
  • Holding both the unlock and lower levers simultaneously, the trainee lowers the platform steadily to the designated height and releases both levers together.
  • The lesson concludes with confirmation of proper elevation, secure locking, and safe lowering, followed by an optional repeat practice phase.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings
